Google Sites
So as I've mentioned before, in my Online Journalism class we are designing our own online porfolio. We were given two options to design our portfolio with: wordpress or google sites. Both sites are awesome but I have choosen wordpress. It's amazing how many options I have when creating my portfolio. First, I picked a template I wanted to use. Next, I can change any color to match what I want. I can really make my pages look exactly like I have pictured them in my head. Everything is coming together and I'm very excited. I will post the URL soon!

Online Portfolio
So for the past couple of weeks, we have been in the process of making an online portfolio in my Online Journalism class. I had never thought about having an online portfolio before this class, but have realized it really is a pretty cool idea. After deciding what content we want to put on the pages, we made a rough draft of what we want our final page to look like. We decided what colors we wanted, text and pictures. We also decided where we want to put everything so it fits and looks appealing. We had the choice to either work with wordpress or google sites. I had no idea there were so many options to choose from. I am excited to have everything done and perfectly the way I want.

Photoshop ... Yes Please!
So for the last couple of weeks in my Online Journalism class we have been learning how to use Adobe Photoshop. Before this class I had minimal knowledge of how to use this program. After a couple classes worth of learning, I am amazed by what all you can do with this program. I think it will be extremely useful to know the basics of this program when entering the PR world. We have learned how to edit photos to make certain areas stand out, how to touch up portraits, and how to make templates. I am excited to continue learning and editing my own photos with this program!

Brand yourself!
After doing some assigned readings for my Online Journalism, I have learned how important it is for student's like myself to develop a personal brand on the internet. It is becoming more and more important for students to stand out from the rest of the pack. Blogging is a great way to start, you never know just who is going to read your blog and be impressed!
I also learned just how important it is to be careful about what you are doing when using Google. A quote from an article stated, Google confirmed this week that it keeps and collates researched terms, which means the company can be forced to divulge them under court order. This is scary and needs to be kept in mind

HTML?
I'd hear of HTML coding a few times here and there but never really understood what it was all about until my Online Journalism class. We have learned how to create our own websites and it's actually pretty cool. Before this class I guess I just thought images and text would appear where you wanted kind of like a Word document but each item, picture, text, everything has a specific code in order for it to show up properly on the web. You can change size, style, add bullets, anything you can do in Word. Right now we are working on our online resume. I think it’s going to be very beneficial to have an online resume because right now more and more is being offered online.

Spring Game
I got the chance to soak up some sunshine, while watching the Aggie football players go head to head in their sping game. The weather was beautiful and the Aggie's gave the crowd a show with lots of big plays. There were around 5,000 fans in attendence. I think everyone is curious to see the new coach and a little more about his style of play. I'm excited for the coming season and hopefully we can pull out some wins this year!
PR Conference
I attended the PR Conference on campus this past Monday and was very impressed. The conference was put on by PRSSA, a student lead association. Student's came up with the ideas, went out in the community to get sponsors and did all the promoting. I attended the morning seesions and also lunch. My favorite session was the non-profit speaker from the Make A Wish Foundation. She was very informative and inspiring. I now want to pursue public relations in the non-profit industry. Good work everyone who worked the conference, it was great!

Special Olympics fights "R" word
I recently read an article that talked about how many foundations, mainly the Special Olympics, are trying to put a stop to people using the "R" word. They are currently working on a new campaign to spread awareness and hopefully put an end to the word. For one of my classes, I am currently doing a team project for the Special Olympics of Utah. I am curious to see what their campaign turns out like to compare. But back to the article. President Obama was doing a late night show with Jay Leno. They were bowling and apparently our president wasn't doing the best. He then proceeded to comment ...about how his bowling score was one belonging to the Special Olympics. I was very disappoint but think this happens a lot more than we think, the president doing it just made it more public. I hear the "R" almost daily and I think everyone should check themselves because it has become so frequent in our society. While doing a search for a picture to put with this article, I went to google images. I think put special olympics in the search box. My images came up along with related searchs. The "R" word was one of them ... that is really sad!

Second life anyone?
So in one of my classes last week, my teacher talked about all the new and facsinating technologies out there today. His presentation included i-report, second life and i-report second life. Prior to this class, I had no idea these existed and I was astounded. It is becoming so much easier to personalize every bit of our lives. Anyone can shoot video footage of what they think is newsworthy and put it online for the rest of the world to see. In second life, everyday people can make up a virtual avatar of whoever they want. They can then do whatever they wish. People are actually making a steady income through second life. It scares me that I had no idea there was something like this out there when it is such a big deal, with so many advantages and disadvantages. I do think controversy with arise from programs such as this. I think this is just the beginning and am curious to see where this virtual world thing goes.

Local Investing Association Provides Education and Practice to Assist Individuals on Quest for Financial Independence
www.cvaia.com
Dear Mr. McCollum,
Cache Valley Area Investors Association (CVAIA) provides anyone an opportunity to acquire the correct mentality and approaches to investing so they can be successful, which results in them spending their time doing something they love, not just a job that provides an income.
This member driven group is the first of its kind in Cache Valley. President Parker believes that with his help, anyone can go from an earned income of showing up for work and receiving paychecks to one completely passive and free of debt within three to 10 years.
The basic principles CVAIA teaches include financial, physical, mental, social and spiritual health and wealth. Success occurs when individuals work confidently from the bottom to the top.
CVAIA began in August 2007 and now has members from many geographical locations and from all walks of life. The members come together with the same belief: that education mitigates the risks of investing. CVAIA embraces the Law of Attraction, Law of Abundance, and Law of Exchange.
Please feel free to visit our website to learn more. If you have further questions, please let me know and I would love to give you more information.

AT&T partners with Lil' Wayne for social media outreach (PR Week)
AT&T is partnering up with Lil' Wayne to reach and inform a younger generation through social media. The way company's reach their audience is very different these days than it was for my parents for example. Companies can now promote their campaigns through texting, emails or creating fan based web sites.
Lil' Wayne is a huge name in the music scene right now and the article said AT&T customers downloaded his ringtones more than any other artist in 2008. Since so many young people now have cellphones, their strategy will most likely be very successful because they have researched and keyed into the interest of their target audience.
"[We want to] engage younger customers to find relevance with our brand," added Mimi Chan, director of national marketing for AT&T. "We want to resonate with them, so they know we have the best music, texting."

Special Olympics Ups Outreach
I got the chance to read the article, "Special Olypics Ups Outreach" this morning and had no idea the Winter Games were so close, as they are being held in Idaho this year. The PR team's goal for this event wants to heavily promote and get as many people involved as possible. I think this is such a great opportunity for people to volunteer and expose themselves to these wonderful people. Living close to the Idaho border, I'm curious to see how much PR coverage I hear.
Kirsten Suto Seckler, global brand marketing and awareness directors said, "Our goal is to promote the program so all people can realize they can be part of the movement." This event has an esitmated 2,500 participants from over 200 countires coming together to celebrate the lives and accomplishments of people with disabilites.

Presentation By Catherine Goodman
I was able to watch Catherine Goodman, a graduate of USU, present on Friday, January 16 at the Alumni House on campus. I went as an extra credit assignment for a class, but left with very valueable tips on life and balancing your career. Mrs. Goodman came from a little town in Utah and had to work petty jobs to get her education. She majored in English with a minor in French, but her career path lead her to obtain different jobs, including work in marketing and PR. She is now the National Marketing Director of the company she works for out of Salt Lake. She presented some useful tips about how to have a successful career and I'll leave you with some of my favorites!
*Don't try to control life, rather, bloom where you are planted
*Assume you are as smart as everyone else, because you probably are
*The greatest satifsfaction comes from helping others
*Find mentors who can also be friends
*Don't be afraid to ask for things- you may actually get them
*Do the jobs no one else wants to do
*Know what you know, and know what you don't know
*Don't be afraid of being promoted- any monkey can be taught any skill

Logan, UT 84341
Contact Info- 801-555-4567
LOGAN, Utah- ABC Real Estate LLC is the first business in Northern Utah to handle real estate transactions using trust funds. The new company is looking for four beneficiaries to collaborate within the land trust and will provide benefits to each. These beneficiaries include a seller, a buyer, an investor, and a credit beneficiary. President Preston Parker states, “We find buyers and sellers and we connect them to each other.”
This process gives people who have previously had bad credit the opportunity to purchase a home. When it sells the buyer gets 10%, while the other three beneficiaries get 30%.
Parker says the main purpose is to help people out. “What we want is for people to be able to progress and advance. People who can’t get into homes, we’re helping them,” says Parker. As president of the company, Parker’s job is to handle outside paperwork and find investors. A contract agreed upon by all beneficiaries is set up and the individual buying the house must sign.

Letter to Cousin
426 N 500 E Apt 2
Logan, UT 84321
January 10, 2009
Dear Cousin,
I am writing in response to your recent question concerning the definition and duties of a public relations practitioner. When working in PR it will be my responsibility to establish and maintain effective relationships with the outside publics. These publics are all important and may include the media, fellow employees, consumers, and government officials. My job will also be to create a positive image of the organization or company I am working for and to increase awareness and publicity. If disputes or problems do arise, it will be my job to keep or restore image.
My duties will be very diverse and will require mastery of many different skills. Some of these duties include dealing with the media, community, employees, marketing, and issue management. Depending on the branch I chose to pursue, I could possibly be doing promotional work or fundraising.
My work day may consist of a combination of these activities: writing press and news releases, designing brochures, writing newsletters, public service advertisements and announcements, and writing annual reports. I will have to be very flexible because my day’s schedule could change at any time. I’m currently working on my writing skills, along with team working skills and public speaking ability. As you know I love communicating and working closely with people and will be doing so often in this profession.
The majority of PR practitioners work for either corporations or agencies. Others work for associations, health care, government, and charitable organizations.
As you can see, public relations is a dynamic and diverse field. I’m extremely excited to finish school, do an internship and get out into the real world. If you have any further, more specific questions let me know and I’d love to answer them for you.
Sincerely,
Jamie
